Economic Development and Infrastructure

"South Dakota is truly a wonderful place to live, but it is not the easiest place to make a living. Rural states like ours must continuously work hard to grow and prosper in an ever-changing economic environment."

Dakota Minnesota & Eastern RailroadSouth Dakota is a small state; Senator Johnson knows that his voice and influence are instrumental in securing federal commitments to important state projects that fuel our economy and maintain our infrastructure. He was proud to secure a $26.5 million appropriation for the Lewis and Clark water project in 2007 an amount nearly double the original appropriation. Through his Chairmanship of the Water and Power Subcommittee of the Senate Energy Committee and his position on the Energy and Water Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee Tim will continue to fight for funding for Lewis and Clark and other important projects in South Dakota.

Senator Johnson secured $10 million to jumpstart the DUSEL project in Lead. Without that money South Dakota could not have been awarded the lab and would have missed out on all the jobs that come along with such a critical venture.

Senator Johnson's seniority and committee assignments are essential to the federal support these projects receive. In order to maintain focus on these important economic development initiatives Senator Johnson has developed his Hometown Prosperity Plan. The plan lays out four "pillars" to advance South Dakota's economy, promoting partnerships, emphasizing entrepreneurship, investing in the public good and protecting pocketbooks.
